I have enjoyed the talent of musician Allison Russel since the early 2000s Vancouver, when she was performing with Po’ Girl, and alongside Awna Teixeira with Salt. I have continued to follow her career through the years, watching Allison mature as an artist and a wife and mother, travelling the globe with husband J.T. Nero and Birds of Chicago.
More recently Allison has joined with Our Native Daughters. 2021 brought the release of Allison Russell’s debut solo album outside child.
With outside child Allison has a story to tell. It is her story. Raw and painful, strength and truth, determination and revolution. outside world comes from the soul. There are few albums that challenges the heart to listen. Fewer that speak out for and give hope to the future survivors of childhood abuse and racism. Few albums that can bring you to tears, with every listen, because you know this is music that matters.
While outside child delivers an important statement, Allison does so with grace and that beautiful voice. Sweet like honey, lovely and empathetic. It is no wonder that the album has been so favorably received, and nominated for three Grammy Awards. In Canada, Allison has been nominated for four Folk Music Awards, and is on the long list for the Polaris Music Prize. At the UK Americana Awards Allison took the prizes for International Artist of the Year and won International Album of the Year for Outside Child.
Allison Russell has worked hard and put in her time to arrive at this musical moment in time. Get ready to take notice of this rising star. One day soon she will be up there with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Odette, and Billie Holliday.
