Ahead, a set of ancient markers jutted from the soil—half-buried stones arranged in a wide spiral. They pulsed softly, and as the wind moved through them, it carried a tone that reminded Sienna of Lyen’s voice—only deeper, older.
Not words.
Invitation.
They stepped into the spiral together.
Each turn shifted the tone. Higher. Fuller. The landscape responded with flashes of other places—brief glimpses: a well beneath a red moon, a chamber filled with roots, a group of figures sitting in silence beside a black mirror.
Sienna gripped Kai’s arm. “Are we seeing memory?”
He nodded slowly. “Or being seen by it.”
When they reached the center, the air cracked.
Not violently. Like a shell yielding.
A figure stood where no one had been—a child, maybe twelve. Barefoot, eyes too clear for the age they wore. Their voice was steady:
“You walked between signals. You remembered the forgetting.
Now something remembers you.”
Kai took a cautious step forward. “Who are you?”
The child smiled—not kindly. Not cruelly.
“I am a beginning that wasn’t finished.”
And the spiral behind them closed.
