I have long had a love for the Hawaiian Islands and it wasn’t difficult to decide on a wedding and honeymoon location when my husband Robert and I decided to wed. While I had visited the islands too many times to count it was a first visit for Robert. I was excited to share all my favorite locations and experiences on Oahu and the Big Island.
I had recently acquired my first video camera which allowed me to compose the following home videos from these three weeks in January 1991.
Day two and it’s It’s Aloha Friday, January 11, 1991. We start the day watching body surfing at Sandy Beach, spend the afternoon at Battery Randolph, Fort DeRussy where we met with a group of young Marines who were setting off for the Persian Gulf days before the start of the first Gulf War. A stroll along Kalakaua Avenue, the evening sunset, and Aloha Friday fireworks cap off the day.
Where better than to spend a Saturday afternoon than Makaha, the Oahu beach where the locals come to enjoy the long rides with the challenges of a powerful backwash and riptides!
January 14, 1991 – join us on a flight from Honolulu to the quiet Kona Coast of the Big Island. After a welcome of barren lava fields we arrive at the beautiful Keauhou Bay, our home base for two weeks of exploration of the Island of Hawaii.
The site of our resort sits upon the land where Hawaiian royalty would reside for recreation. Many ancient and spiritual experiences were shared during the duration of our stay.
We are up and on the road early. We enjoy a road trip to the northern tip of the Big Island, through Paniolo country, Kamuela, Hawi, Kapaau, and the Pololu Lookout. We experience the strong mana of the Mookini Heiau and watch the humback whales just offshore where they have returned to Hawaii to give birth to their young.
January 17 we drive south to Pu’uhonia O Honaunau, where Hawaiian culture is still a way of life. Back on the road to Kealakekua Bay, where are arrival marks one day less than 212 years when Captain James Cook first sighted Hawaii. He would soon lose his life at this bay.
Our Hawaiian wedding was an intimate affair, in a little grass hut on the shores of Keahou, Kona. We had the honor of having the blessing of Uncle George Naope.
This first trip together to Hawaii was just the beginning. After many trips back-and-forth we were fortunate to spend a few years living on the Big Island. In 1997 a new Internet Startup – The Mining Company – invited us aboard where we created content and shared our fondness about the Big Island of Hawaii.
Take A Walk – I have been a geography geek since I was a youngster. I enjoy learning about places across the globe and the people who live there. Join me with some of my favorable city adventurers as they show you what makes their home, and destinations they enjoy visiting unique.
