GeoGuessr presents plenty of challenging entertainment for anyone who is a fan of geography and maps. I have always enjoyed learning about the world at large and exploring the nooks and crannies of maps and atlases.
When Google Earth was made available to the public I can remember thinking that it was the best thing to ever come online. I spent plenty of time spinning the globe and zooming into a new part of the world to explore.
A few months ago I gave the game a spin. Since then I have spent many hours enjoying the various challenges, and creating a few of my own.
Released in 2013 by creator Anton Wallén, GeoGuessr uses a semi-randomized Google Streetview location, the aim of the game is to discover where in the world GeoGuessr has sent the player.
Gameplay Options
Competitive – Serious players might want to qualify for tournament play through Battle Royale and Duels competition.
Battle Royale – This challenge against other players comes in two forms, one where players have three chances to guess the country location while the other depends on distance from the location. As play continues the challenger gains points to climb through bronze, silver, and gold status.
The Daily Challenge – Play against yourself or thousands of other players. Five random locations from across the globe each day. Beat your personal best as you climb through bronze, silver, and gold medals.
Country Streak – How many countries can you identify in a row?
US State Streak – Similar to the Country Streak, except with the American States.
Explorer – Conquer the world country by country on your quest for bronze, silver, and gold medals.
Play By Map – Choose your adventure via a selection of themed maps.
Pro Leagues – Create or join leagues to play alongside friends or social contacts.
Map Maker – Create maps to share with the GeoGuessr community. One of my personal favorite options.
Since subscribing to Geoguessr I haven’t found the time (or desire) to play my usual electronic games. I have managed to insert Geoguessr gameplay into my everyday activities.
I start my day with The Daily Challengeas this has proved to be a nice session of mental exercise, readying my brain for the days work of research and creativity for the Go Cybernaut network.
I see the benefits growing each day, I am paying more attention to detail to my surroundings and activities. I have obtained more of a global persepctive, recognizing details and aspects of countries I knew little about while discovering more aboutthe locations I was familiar with.
Most importantly, on the game front, I haven’t tired of Geoguessr. I believe there are a world of challenges ahead if I should ever become bored!
Geoguessr Should Be Considered A Sport – Until Geoguessr became competitive, it was just a fun thing for people to do in their free time. Now, it’s getting bigger and there are legitimate pros and competitions for money. It takes skill, but has a perfect learning curve. A month or so of practice will get you to a decent level, but you need to grind a lot harder to make progress afterward.
Radio Roulette – Earlier in 2021, I became somewhat consumed with the “where in the world am I” online game, Geoguessr. At about the same time I discovered Radio.Garden, the “where in the world am I” online radio scanner. It was only a matter of time that the two united to become Radio Roulette.
Radio.Garden – Stream the planet! Radio Garden works by crawling the web for radio streams from across the globe. Using this data, the stations are arranged by geolocation and grouped by cities, represented by a dot, with larger dots representing numerous stations within the town or city.
Let’s Go! – Travel the globe without leaving home!
Electronic Gaming – Video game news, resources, and articles for all ages.
