Personal Chronicle: July 4, 2025 – July 5, 2026 A gift for reflection. A record of now. A story for what’s next.
✍️ Prompt One: “Who am I?”
I’m Hank Bowman. Folks used to call me Henry, but only if they were mad or trying to sell me something. I’m a mechanic by trade, a widower by circumstance, and a grandfather by the grace of time.
I’m the man who fixes what’s broke, not just because it’s cheaper than buying new, but because there’s dignity in making something last. I believe in early mornings, tools put back where they belong, and listening before talking. I don’t say much, but when I do, I mean it.
I’m also a father—still learning how to show up right for my girl, even after all these years. And I’m a grandpa to one sharp-as-a-tack kid who sees the world sideways and brighter than most.
✍️ Prompt Two: “How did I get here?”
I got here the long way—like most men my age. Born in Iowa. Raised on manners, hard work, and biscuits. Spent four decades fixing engines for the folks in Newton. Married Carol when we were too young to know better but just smart enough to make it work.
We had one girl—Melissa. She was my soft spot even when I didn’t know how to show it. After Carol passed, I kept to myself more. House got quieter. Tools got older. But Melissa kept calling. And that little girl of hers? Ellie? She pulled me back into the world without trying to.
Now I drive out to Kansas City every few weeks. Bring pickles. Fix things. Sit quiet on the porch while Ellie tells me how bones turn to fossils.
How did I get here? I stayed steady. I showed up. Even when it hurt. Even when I didn’t know what to say. Sometimes love sounds like an engine turning over again.
