The fire had burned low, but no one moved to feed it.

Sienna held the device steady in her lap, the soft blue signal still pulsing.
Not flickering. Not failing.
Alive.

Kai watched it closely, his sketchbook forgotten at his side.
“It’s not just echoing. It’s choosing its shape.”

Cairo leaned closer, scanning the readouts with a practiced calm.
“Jada wasn’t wrong. This isn’t our tech. It’s older, slower… almost intentional.”

Cero looked up from the flame.
“It’s not a machine.”

Orion stirred slightly, lifting his gaze to the stars.
“It may have been once. But now it’s something else. Something… waiting to remember itself.”

Then, Sienna spoke again.
Her voice was measured, but her hands trembled.

“Jada just sent another update.”

They all turned toward her.

“She located what she calls the spine. It runs beneath the range—threaded through stone. Deep. Braided. Almost organic.”

Kai furrowed his brow.
“Is it… growing?”

“She doesn’t know. But it’s moving. Not across space—through time. Like it’s pulling something forward, strand by strand.”

The forest was utterly quiet.
No wind. No birds.
Just that pulse.

Cero, still cross-legged, whispered:

“I think it’s finding what we forgot.”

Orion’s voice was low, resolute:

“Then we hold still.
And let it remember us back.”
