I am well blessed with a family representing backgrounds and cultures. My own mother came to Canada from Sweden, far above the Arctic Circle. I remember fondly the stories about the long, dark winters, and herding reindeer. Mom loved to cook and share her favorite Swedish meals, which to her grandchildren, were always a treat. Although my mother lived most of her life in Canada, it was always her Swedish roots that made her unique.
Presently my own grandchildren celebrate having a ‘foreign’ mom. Four of my grandchildren have lovely mothers, one mother has emigrated from the Philippine Islands and the other from Poland!
When I spotted this book about mothers I knew it would be a perfect selection for my grandchildren to share with their very special mommies.
When kids have a mom from another country, they might just find that their lives are a little different from their friends. Whether Mamma speaks a little different or with an accent, or Maman prepares some unusual foods, or if Mutti has an individual style of dress, we can all agree that sometimes being different is what makes mothers very special!
