Vincent Kahan has spent his life on the African continent, yet the longer he travels it, the less comfortable he becomes with anyone speaking about “Africa” as though it were a single place.

That may be the most important thing to understand about him.

Born in Accra, Ghana, and now based in Cape Town, South Africa, Vincent grew up surrounded by conversation, football, music, food and the understanding that stories belong to communities before they belong to writers.

Journalism taught him how to investigate.

Anthropology taught him to question his assumptions.

Travel taught him to listen.

And Africa keeps teaching him that there is always another story beyond the one he thought he had found.

As Africa Travel Writer for Go Cybernaut, Vincent travels with a camera, notebook, practical shoes and very little interest in collecting destinations merely to say he’s been there. He wants to understand what makes a place itself.

Who cooks here?

What music comes through the windows?

What happened on this road before tourists arrived?

Who benefits when visitors come?

Who doesn’t?

What are people proud of?

What are outsiders consistently getting wrong?

Those questions shape his journalism.

His Africa contains megacities and fishing villages, nightclubs and archaeological sites, football grounds and coral reefs, artists’ studios and desert roads. It contains innovation, humour, ordinary Tuesday mornings and complicated histories.

He refuses to turn communities into scenery.

Wildlife is another important part of Vincent’s work, but even there his perspective is deliberately wider than the camera frame. Seeing an elephant is extraordinary. Understanding the ecosystem, conservation workers, neighbouring communities, land pressures and tourism economy surrounding that elephant makes the story meaningful.

His photography follows the same philosophy.

Vincent doesn’t hunt relentlessly for the perfect image. Sometimes he lowers the camera.

That decision is almost sacred to him.

Some experiences deserve participation more than documentation.

Away from assignments, he’s easier and funnier than his thoughtful photographs might suggest. He’ll play football until his knees complain, disappear onto a hiking trail, spend ridiculous amounts of time identifying a bird he claims not to care about, or surprise an unsuspecting karaoke room with an excellent vintage-soul performance.

He loves water.

Kayaks, coastlines, reefs and rivers repeatedly find their way into his travels. Diving taught him another form of observation: underwater, you cannot dominate a place with conversation. You watch. You breathe. You adapt.

That has quietly influenced his writing too.

Vincent asks:

His travel philosophy isn’t built around conquering maps.

It is built around relationships.

A roadside conversation in Ghana can matter as much as a famous monument. A community conservation project can be more important than the animal photograph that initially brought the visitor there. A meal cooked by someone willing to explain its history can reveal more than an afternoon of sightseeing.

His notebooks consequently contain peculiar mixtures of material: interviews, bird names, football scores, recipes, directions, fragments of songs, phone numbers, sketches, questions and sentences he hasn’t figured out yet.

At the top of many pages appears the same handwritten reminder:

Ask better questions.

Because Vincent believes good travel doesn’t make the traveller the centre of the world.

It shows them how enormous the world was all along.
