ghosts

One of our favourite things about a new week is discovering just how many reasons humanity has created to celebrate, remember, learn and pay attention.

This week gives us an especially wonderful assortment.

We begin in Central America by celebrating Belize, exploring its culture, history, landscapes and people.

Then we cross the Atlantic and Mediterranean to celebrate Malta, where thousands of years of history have accumulated within a remarkably small corner of the world.

Our journey continues as we celebrate Armenia, with its ancient history, distinctive cultural traditions and enduring identity.

Three places.

Three completely different stories.

And thousands more waiting beyond them.

🦏 Sharing the Planet

Our celebrations aren’t limited to the human inhabitants of Earth.

This week we make room for two extraordinary fellow travellers.

We spend some time celebrating rhinoceroses, magnificent animals whose prehistoric silhouettes somehow still wander through our modern world.

Then we turn our attention toward Elephant Appreciation Day and animals whose intelligence, social relationships, communication and remarkable memories continue to fascinate us.

Sometimes curiosity begins simply by paying closer attention to who else lives here.

📓 Dear Diary…

There is something wonderfully intimate about a diary.

Before blogs, feeds, timelines and status updates, people were already recording ordinary days, private worries, family happenings, dreams, observations and small moments they didn’t want to lose.

Some diaries eventually become historical treasures.

Most simply preserve a little piece of a life.

For Dear Diary Day, we celebrate journals, notebooks and the wonderfully human urge to write.

Your story doesn’t need an audience to be worth recording.

🎬 Celebrate Bollywood

Lights.

Music.

Colour.

Dance.

Drama.

Romance.

And stories capable of travelling far beyond the borders where they began.

This week we celebrate Bollywood and the enormous creative universe it occupies within Indian and global popular culture.

There is always another film waiting behind the curtain.

🪷 Mahalaya

Among this week’s observances is Mahalaya, an important moment within the traditions surrounding Durga Puja.

It offers us another opportunity to approach a cultural tradition with curiosity and respect, learning not only what is observed but why it carries meaning for the people who observe it.

💛 Celebrating Daughters

Families are collections of relationships, memories, stories and lives unfolding alongside one another.

For National Daughter Day, we make space to celebrate daughters of every age and the countless ways those relationships become part of family history.

🎵 One Hit. Forever Remembered.

Sometimes an artist needs only one song to become permanently embedded in popular culture.

You hear the opening notes decades later and suddenly…

You know this one.

For One-Hit Wonder Day, we’re celebrating those glorious musical lightning strikes: songs that appeared, conquered radios, lodged themselves inside millions of memories and never entirely left.

💥 Turn the Page

From superheroes and underground comics to manga, memoir, humour, horror, science fiction and graphic storytelling, sequential art has created entire universes one panel at a time.

For Comic Book Day, we’re celebrating the writers, artists, characters, collectors and readers who keep turning the page.

🥞 A Very Important Stack

Not every celebration requires deep contemplation.

Some require syrup.

For Pancake Day, we’re taking a delicious detour through one of those wonderfully adaptable foods that appears in different forms and traditions around the world.

👻 Who’s There?

Perhaps it was the pipes.

Perhaps it was the wind.

Perhaps the floorboards are settling.

Perhaps…

Well, that’s where things get interesting.

Ghost Hunting Day gives us an excuse to explore haunted histories, paranormal traditions, unexplained experiences and humanity’s enduring fascination with what might be lurking just beyond the edges of explanation.

🧣 Wrap Yourself in a Story

A scarf can be practical, fashionable, handmade, inherited, collected while travelling, or simply the thing that makes an outfit feel complete.

For Scarf Day, we’re celebrating one of fashion’s most versatile little rectangles.

🌳 Remembering the People Before Us

Every family tree eventually becomes a forest.

Names emerge from records. Places repeat across generations. Occupations appear. Borders change. Families migrate. Mysteries stubbornly refuse to solve themselves.

And occasionally one tiny discovery sends us racing happily down another genealogical rabbit hole.

For Ancestor Appreciation, we celebrate the people whose lives eventually connected, generation after generation, until somehow there was us.
